From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5-Penner introduces 13 major American holidays in an informative and entertaining way. She explains how some of these special days have ancient religious or agricultural origins, while newer ones commemorate historical events or honor American heroes. The first section of the book devotes a chapter to each event or individual in chronological order (Columbus Day, Independence Day, Washington and Lincoln's Birthdays, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, and Martin Luther King Day). Presidents' Day is mentioned only in the opening chapter. The rest of the book looks at what interests children most-Halloween and Valentine's Day. Christmas is the only religious holiday included. The origin of each celebration is briefly presented, and the author frequently adds interesting anecdotal information. Her writing is clear and will be easily understood. Some suggestions for crafts and games are included, as is a recipe for "Hopping John" for New Year's Day. Ohlsson's gouache paintings show ethnically diverse Americans and add a bright, cheery touch to this slim volume. A suitable addition for general readers, but report writers will need to look elsewhere.
